Braces or Clear Aligners?

The two most popular options for straightening teeth are traditional braces and clear aligners like Invisalign. Both can give you a straighter, more beautiful smile. Many people choose which is right depending on their lifestyle, budget, and oral health. Here are some facts to help you understand which option is better for yourself.

1. How Both Work

Braces consist of metal brackets on your teeth and connected by wires. The wires are tightened by your orthodontist to slowly move your teeth into place. They have been used much longer than aligners and are proven to work extremely well.

Clear aligners are customized for each individual, they are removable trays that gradually move your teeth. You receive a set of trays about every 2 weeks with each being slightly different from the last. Aligners must be worn for 20–22 hours a day to work.

2. Appearance

One of the main reasons people choose to get aligners is that they are almost invisible which is very appealing to teenagers and adults who don't want to be seen wearing them.

Braces are more conspicuous. They are very identifiable with their colored bands or metal wires.

3. Convenience

Both procedures can be a bit painful since your teeth are moving. Braces are much more convenient because you never have to take them off. But they can be more annoying because the brackets rub against your cheeks and they don't allow you to eat certain foods. They also require careful brushing and flossing against wires and brackets, which is very time-consuming.

Aligners are smoother and less annoying. However, you have to take them out each time you eat or drink, and must brush your teeth prior to putting them back on. But at least you are able to drink and eat everything unlike braces.

4. Treatment Time On Average

Braces: 18–24 months

Aligners: 12–18 months

However, aligners can take more time for complex situations like serious bite adjustment or highly rotated teeth. Braces are more capable of taking care of extreme alignment problems. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, braces normally offer finer control over tooth movement, which is much more beneficial and may be required in certain situations.

5. Average Cost

Braces: $3,000–$7,000

Clear Aligners: $3,500–$8,000

Overall, both options are very similar in price and only depend on your preference.

If you have complex orthodontic issues, don't mind about being seen, and prefer lower maintenance, braces may be the better choice

Choos

If you want less noticable option, are diligent about caring for them, and have mild teeth alignment issues, clear aligners might be the better option.
