Welcome to a five-part interview series with Dr. Szymon Hyzak, a psychiatrist with over 25 years of experience at Long Island Psychiatric Services. In this blog, I've interview Dr. Hyzak as he shares his thoughts on how mental health care has changed and answers common questions people often question about. Each part includes three questions that help explain challenges and progresses happening in psychiatry today.
Q1: How has the field of psychiatry changed over time?
Dr. Hyzak:
One of the biggest differences is how much more psychiatry is a part of general healthcare now. Years ago, mental health was typically separate and had a definite stigma. Now, doctors, therapists, and schools all talk to each other more, and individuals are more open to talking about mental health and getting help. That's a big change.
Q2: Has public awareness of mental health improved during your career?
Dr. Hyzak:
Yes, definitely. Many people used to not talk about it. But over time, with more education and media attention, people are becoming more open and willing to speak up. Social media and public figures have also helped normalize mental health conversations. We’ve definitely made progress.
Q3: How do you build trust with patients who are hesitant about getting treatment?
Dr. Hyzak:
I start with listening, many patients walk in uncertain or even scared because of poor past experiences or just plain not knowing what to expect. I try to give them space to talk and not feel judged. Patience and honesty is what works best in the beginning.
As seen in Part 1, psychiatry has grown both medically and in human connectivity. Dr. Hyzak's shows that progress in mental health care is not just creating new treatments, but how we treat each patient individually.
