Welcome to a five-part interview series with Dr. Szymon Hyzak, a psychiatrist with over 25 years of experience at Long Island Psychiatric Services. In this blog, I've interview Dr. Hyzak as he shares his thoughts on everyday stuggles with mental health. Each part includes three questions that help explain challenges and progresses happening in psychiatry today.
Q1: What are some signs that somebody may be having mental difficulty?
Dr. Hyzak:
It can be very different for each person, but it's mainly the changes in behavior like staying isolated, sleep problems, or not enjoying things they used to enjoy. Others seem to feel more more tired and irritable than usual. The important thing is to pay attention when something feels "off" for longer than a few days. It's okay to ask how they're doing and follow up.
Q2: How do you remain supportive to people while trying to help them?
Dr. Hyzak:
What you say doesn’t have to be perfect, but being there is what really counts for many individuals. Telling them something as simple as "I'm here if you ever want to talk" can really help make people feel more connected and want to express themselves. One of the main things is to not jump to conclusions. Just listening is most often the best help you can offer.
Q3: Can people reach out for support even if things aren’t that serious?
Dr. Hyzak:
Absolutely not. You don't need to wait until things do become serious. Actually, it could be healthier to call a little sooner. Mental health services aren't just for big crises in your life. It's a good and healthy choice to get help whenever you think you need, It's never too early.
Part 2 covered everyday mental health conflicts that individuals face. As Dr. Hyzak explained, just being present and listening can make all the difference!
