Welcome to the last part of the five-part interview series with Dr. Szymon Hyzak, a psychiatrist with over 25 years of experience at Long Island Psychiatric Services. In this blog, I've interview Dr. Hyzak as he shares his thoughts on what the future of mental may be like. Each part includes three questions that help explain challenges happening in psychiatry today.
Q1: What do you see will happen in the future of mental health?
Dr. Hyzak:
That more and more individuals will talking about it. Knowing that years ago, mental health was something that one would not talk about. And now it's becoming a normal topic of everyday discussion. Mainly the younger generations are becoming more open about finding help. That gives me lots of hope that we're headed in the right direction.
Q2: Is there something you wish everyone understood about mental health?
Dr. Hyzak:
That it doesn't mean there's "something wrong" with you when you're struggling because everyone struggles at some point in their lives. Mental health is the same as physical health, sometimes we just need a little more. The more we approach it like it's any other aspect of our health, the healthier we all are.
Q3: You've practiced psychiatry for 25 years. What continues to inspire you?
Dr. Hyzak:
It’s the people I meet day to day. Every day, I meet someone who’s trying their best to heal, grow, or just get through something tough. Being part of that process of helping someone find their way back to themselves is incredibly meaningful. That’s what makes it all worth it.
As we reach the end of this five-part series, Dr. Hyzak reminds us how treatment for mental health is about connection, development, and awareness. The future is promising when increasing numbers of people come out and take mental health seriously.
